Starting of a new project

I got another software development project for one of my friend. This is a software for a money lending business. These kind of businesses are very customizable. Even this is not such a big software, I have to be very careful of all steps since this software is dealing with money and one single mistake can make a disaster.

New Logo for KES Engineering (Pvt) Ltd

Finally, one of my logos were selected as the company's new logo. It took more than a month to finalize this process. The MD was outsourced some designers for this process, but finally the logo I created last was selected as the new logo of KES Engineering (Pvt) Ltd.

It was the MD's idea to put a triangle some where in the logo, because he believed that triangle can represent many meanings that is related to construction industry. Also, triangle will bring prosperity to the organization.

So, now I was able to established my first landmark in the organization by designing the company's logo. This logo is copyrighted material for KES Engineering (Pvt) Ltd. Sri Lanka.

Network setup for Transwater KES

I have been appointed as the IT Executive for Transwater KES JV. I started working there from 2nd of July 2008. The company is a construction firm.

My main responsibilities include; managing and troubleshooting the windows 2003 server and other windows XP based client computers. As soon as I started working there I was gone through the server and client computers and understood that there are many problems in the network.

First thing I realized was that even the company used many computers (17) at the head office and several other computers at regional offices and sites; they are still processing data in a manual system. The computer proficiency of the most workers is very poor.

Then I investigated the server that is running windows 2003. Soon I discovered many errors in the configurations and strategies. The physical network structure itself is a badly implemented. The backup strategy is just wasting time and resources, but nothing does to take a real backup. Soon I understood that the whole IT strategy is just a waste of money and resourced as well as time and effort of human personals.

Within my first week of this company, I was submitted a proposal to implement the network. I outlined mainly rearranging the physical network design, change of strategy and training of users.

My goal was developing a trouble less network that really deliver the functionalities of having a network in an organization. To do this I wanted to go with Linux technologies. I planed to install a Fedora Linux server and Windows XP clients on the network.

The process became more complex than forecasted. The network is heavily affected with viruses and the MacAfee virus guard was out of date for months. Also viruses altered the MacAfee scanning also making it worse to clean even update.

So I decided to format all computers one by one, but that is also became very hard work because employees are using computers. So the work also has to carry out as regularly. With some supporting peoples I was managed to format and clean some computers and keep it alone without connecting to the network.

Today I installed Fedora 7 on a separate computer and linked the formatted computers through another switch to fedora server. Now there are two networks running parallel. The windows network is difficult to pull-out because they are using it as a file server for an accounting system. So that system will keep running at least for few more weeks.

I will implement other stages on the fedora system and finally pull-out the windows server from the network.

Income Vs Spending

Ok this is going to be the best article of this blog. All of us wonder every day thinking of our income and blaming to the government to retail shops that the income is not enough to live. Including USA this is now becoming globalization with the food price goes up. Now we are going to concider about this matter in deep.

We thought that the income is not increasing with the increasing of living cost. This is more important to those who lives in third world developing countries. But the real problem is not the income, it is the spenditure. The main reason for this problem is our spenditure grows every day and this rate is much higher than the income rate.

More hi-tech gadgets are coming to market and we are moving towards a luxury living even we can not effort. Banks and other financial organizations are helping to move into this living by giving credit cards and other loans. And eventually these businesses are gorwing but we are getting poor every day.

We have to carefully plan and spend our income only for the things that we really need. We have to limit our expectations and try to satisfy with the things that we already own. It is not that hard, now days everything becoming fashion and why not concider this as a fashion also.

Try to save at least something from your earnings and that will ensure you in bad times. You must have a medical insurance. Most important thing is you just have to move towards hi-tech living slowly and balance it with your income.

How to manage your bank account?

I believe that every person should have a saving bank account. But the problem is how to manage a bank account? A saving account is a technique you use to deposit and keep your money securely for future use. But most people do (including me) is they deposite money and get back those money for various resons. That is not a good practice. You must save some money in your bank account not for immediate futre use, but as along term saving at least for another 5 years. You should not withdraw money from your saving account, unless it is very very important thing untill it reaches to the final time limit that you predicted, say five years.

Credit cards make you rich or poor?

Credit card is something like you getting a loan from a bank. Most people get poor by getting a credit card. There is a famous say that if you want to get rich you should first stop using credit cards. I think it is true because when you have a credit card, you don't afraid to spend. Because you know you have some backup money, and then when you see something interesting to you, even you dont need it at that time you are more likely to buy it because you know that you have not money but the credit cards in your pocket.

I have a friend in my office and he got a credit card from the most famous credit card bank in Sri Lanka HSBC. The first thing he did was buying a laptop to pay by installments. Now he have to pay more than Rs.8000/- per month and I know that his salary is not even that much. Now after 3 months he is trying to sell that laptop to pay the credit card balance.

What I think is having a credit card is not a problem but you have to keep it somewhere hidden in you pocket and you must completely forget that you have a credit card. My best choice is a debit card. There are lots of advantages having a debit card than a credit card. You can only spend what you have on you account and you will not need to pay it back. Other thing is, debit cards are not having a security theft.

The most important thing is that you have to remember to sped only what you have.
